How Green Investments in the Marine Sector Can Bring a Tide of Economic and Social Benefits

(Media-Newswire.com) - Manila/Nairobi, 23 January 2012 - Representatives from over 70 governments, as well as scientists and marine experts from around the world, will meet in Manila, the Philippines, from 23-27 January 2012, for the Global Conference on Land-Ocean Connections and the Intergovernmental Review of the Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment ( GPA ).
Organized by the UN Environment Programme ( UNEP ) and hosted by the government of the Philippines, the event is set to deliver a wide range of policies and actions for improving the management of wastewater, marine litter and pollution from fertilizers affecting oceans and coasts.
On 24 January, UNEP will hold a training session for journalists with marine experts to explore the key issues being addressed at the conference and the role of oceans and coasts in a low-carbon, resource-efficient Green Economy - a central focus of the UN's Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development to held in Brazil in June 2012.
On 25 January, a Press Conference will take place following the official opening of the GPA event to launch the new, flagship UNEP study, 'Green Economy in a Blue World".
This interactive briefing session with leading marine experts will address topics including:
Coastal Ecosystems: Values and Services
Impacts of Land-Based Pollution on Livelihoods and Economies
Fisheries in a Green Economy

Green Economy in a Blue World - a landmark report prepared by UNEP and 7 other organizations - examines opportunities across 6 marine-based sectors, from renewable energy to eco-tourism, to boost economic growth and improve livelihoods through a transition to a low-carbon, resource efficient Green Economy.
Speakers include: Secretary of the Dept. of the Environment and Natural Resources in the Philippines, Deputy Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme and renowned experts from UN agencies and international research institutes.
