(Media-Newswire.com) - YPSILANTI: The Eastern Michigan University Board of Regents, at its regular meeting Oct 18, approved the 2012-2013 General Fund scholarships, awards and grants proposal totaling just over $36 million.
The budget represents a more than $2.3 million increase ( 6.9 percent ) over the 2011-1012 budget of $33.7 million. During the past five years, Eastern Michigan has increased its student financial aid by 68 percent ( including the 6.9 percent proposal for FY13 ), reflecting its continuing commitment to help Michigan students and families in this challenging economic environment.
"The University and the Board strongly believe in supporting our students," said Susan Martin, president of Eastern Michigan University. "The increase in student aid underscores the University's significant financial investment in our students' success."
The $36 million approved budget includes $22.9 million for scholarships, awards and grants; $7.2 million athletic grants-in-aid; $1 million for federal and state matches; and $4.8 million for graduate aid.
The increase in financial support is further evidence of Eastern Michigan's determined efforts to help Michigan students and their families during the current economic climate.
Over the last three years, tuition at Eastern has increased by only $20 per credit hour, an average of 2.5 percent - far less than other Michigan universities.
This was implemented at a time of significant reductions in state funding. During the same three-year period, state funding to support Eastern has declined by $14 million, from $78.6 million three years ago, to $64.6 million this year, representing an 18-percent decrease in funding.
