(Media-Newswire.com) - In distributing 'No Smoking' signs to local businesses this week, a volunteer group headed by the Public Health Department has literally put the writing on the wall regarding smoking in public places.
The drive sought wider compliance with the Tobacco Law ( 2008 ) which requires prominently-displayed 'No Smoking' signs to be mounted in all public places. These include beauty salons and barber shops, laundromats, enclosed bars, restaurants and pool halls, as well as shops, shopping centres, restrooms and transportation terminals.
Some 16 Public Health staff and Cayman Islands Cancer Society volunteers distributed about 150 signs in observation of World No Tobacco Day ( 31 May ).
"I thank all our volunteers who went door-to-door to assist local businesses in complying with Cayman's tobacco legislation. I also thank business owners for working with us. The response was very good, people were appreciative and no-one denied us," said Health Promotions Officer Therese Prehay.
She added: "We will continue our 'No Smoking' sign distribution over the next few weeks."
Minister of Health the Hon. Mark Scotland also commended the volunteers as well as those businesses that were already in compliance: "As per our Tobacco Law, all enclosed public places, including work places, parks, indoor bars and restaurants must be 100 % smoke free and I would like to acknowledge the efforts of the business community in complying with this legislation."
He added: "The bottom line is that smoking extracts a heavy toll on the heart and lungs and imposes huge long-term costs. Curbing smoking in public places at least cuts down on dangerous second-hand smoke and that is an important step forward."
