(Media-Newswire.com) - A free public lecture about the elusive 18th century Lady Miller of Batheaston, and her poetry gatherings, will take place at the University of Bath on Wednesday 18 November.
Lady Anna Miller ( 1741 – 1781 ), of the historic Chetwynd household, found inspiration for her ‘poetical assemblies’ held in Batheaston in 1774 after living in France and touring through Italy.
Her introduction of ‘Bouts-Rimés’, a poetic game, started a fashion that found favour in the homes of Jane Austen and Christina Rossetti and swept well beyond England.
Martin Sturge, an active member of the Royal Literary & Scientific Institution, will talk about the origins and achievements of Lady Miller’s poet receptions.
He has recently sponsored the rebinding of a rare volume of Lady Miller’s poetical assemblies, held in the Institutions’ historic library.
He said: “While perusing the volume I was completely intrigued to discover more about this mysterious lady.”
Martin’s lecture is the last in the General University Lecture Programme for this series.
