Hinchinbrook receives $1.34 million in disaster assistance
Local Government Minister Desley Boyle today announced $1,348,107 in disaster assistance for Hinchinbrook Shire Council to help cover the cost of repairs after storms and flooding hit the area earlier this year.
(Media-Newswire.com) - Local Government Minister Desley Boyle today announced $1,348,107 in disaster assistance for Hinchinbrook Shire Council to help cover the cost of repairs after storms and flooding hit the area earlier this year.
“The flooding associated with tropical cyclones Charlotte and Ellie that swept though northern Queensland during January and February this year caused significant damage throughout the region,” Ms Boyle said.
“Hinchinbrook council was left with a major task to get their local public assets and roads back in working order.
“This meant a range of emergency works and post-disaster repairs were required, including clearing vegetation, debris and silt from roads; emergency grading; erecting safety signs and barriers; pothole patching and drainage repairs.”
Ms Boyle said some of the major costs included:
·$376,350 for grading of roads;
·$164,950 for pothole patching;
·$271,810 to repair cross road drainage structures;
·$536,380 to repair essential council assets;
·$68,830 to remove trees and vegetation from roadways; and
·$83,460 for silt and debris removal; and
·$26,300 to install road safety signs and barriers.
“Obviously, the cost of these repair works was a major burden on Hinchinbrook Shire Council’s finances,” she said.
“That is why the State and Commonwealth governments have made $1,348,107 in funding available to help with the repair costs. Hinchinbrook has also played its part by contributing $180,000.
“Importantly, this funding allocation has also helped to support the employment of six local workers during the global economic slowdown.
“This means that since 2004-05, the State and Commonwealth governments have provided Hinchinbrook Shire Council with more than $4.12 million through the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements program.”
