(Media-Newswire.com) - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Minister Desley Boyle said the eyes of Queensland music fans would be glued to the Torres Strait when the Queensland Music Festival kicks off on Thursday Island on July 17.
Ms Boyle said some of the Torres Strait’s finest young and emerging performers would be the curtain raisers for the acclaimed show Hidden Republic performed by the Black Arm Band.
“The Black Arm Band features 25 of Australia’s leading singers, songwriters and musicians and has been in high demand internationally since they performed their inaugural show Murundak in 2006,” Ms Boyle said.
The concert – the largest ever to be performed on Thursday Island – will be beamed directly from the Torres Strait into Brisbane’s city heart and shown on a big screen in Reddacliff Place.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for the homegrown talents of the Torres Strait. Workshops have been running behind the scenes for the past few months with local musicians coming together to develop the musical production,” said the Minister.
“The workshops aim to unearth and nurture emerging local musical talent and to reflect and celebrate the unique voice of the region and its people.
“The four students, from Tagai State College on Thursday Island, will also have the opportunity to perform at the Brisbane Powerhouse.
“I know how much talent there is in the Torres Strait and I’m looking forward to watching some of the brightest up-and-comers show the rest of Queensland what they can do,” Ms Boyle said.
The Department of Communities has contributed $20,000 towards the staging to the Thursday Island. Other funding contributions have been supplied by the Department of Premier and Cabinet, Blueprint for the Bush and Q150.
