Carolina Commons is a new neighborhood to be developed by UNC on a 63-acre tract in Carrboro that will offer University faculty and staff single-family town homes and condominium homes at below-market rates. UNC officials hope this financial component and the neighborhood’s proximity to campus will attract talented faculty and staff who want to be able to afford to live near where they work. The homes and landscaping of Carolina Commons will also be designed to be environmentally sustainable and as green as possible.
The site for Carolina Commons, which is bisected by Bolin Creek, is a 63-acre tract owned by the University since 1940. The tract is surrounded by these neighborhoods: Winmore to the south, Lake Hogan Farms to the west, The Highlands to the east, and a proposed new residential development ( Colleton Crossing ) to the north. The University held an informational meeting about Carolina Commons for these neighbors Dec. 15, 2008.
The proposal submitted to Carrboro requests approval of 166 dwelling units, including single-family, townhome and condominium units. Of this total, 149 units will be part of the Carolina Commons faculty-staff housing program. In the northwest corner of the tract, UNC is proposing 17 single-family lots, which would be sold at market rate and help subsidize the below-market units.
The University’s development consultant for this project is Bryan Properties Inc., a Chapel Hill-based land development company. The consulting engineer is Mitchell Westendorf, P.A, and the landscape architect is Tony M. Tate Landscape Architecture, P.A.
Directions: The Giles Horney Building is on Airport Drive, just off Martin Luther King Boulevard, about 1½ miles from campus. If going north from campus, turn left onto Airport Drive from Martin Luther King Boulevard. The building is immediately on your right. Parking is available at the building or in the nearby overflow lot.
