(Media-Newswire.com) - 'Get on yer bike' in 2009 and visit the latest exhibition at Lancaster City Museum. The Get on yer Bike! exhibition runs from Saturday, 24 January to Saturday, 18 April and looks at the history of cycling and how the bicycle has changed over time.
From the very early and uncomfortable looking hobby horse to the compact, foldable bike, Brompton, this exhibition will show how bicycles have evolved and developed and how cycling gained popularity to become a favourite pastime.
There will be lots of bicycles from different eras on display including a 1920's policeman's bike, the large and cumbersome looking tricycle and a bike used in the army in the 1930's.
Activities will run throughout the exhibition including talks on:
• Cycling and Social Movements, by Dave Horton, on Monday, 26 January
• Round the World in 20 minutes, by John Whitelegg on Monday, 23 February
• 'Cycling in the Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, by Tony Riden on Monday, 23 March.
This is also a great opportunity to get the whole family back on their bikes and get fit for the New Year. In 2005, Lancaster and Morecambe became a Cycling Demonstration Town which aims to get 'more people cycling, more safely, more often.' The exhibition explores the health and environmental benefits of cycling so you can see what a difference you could make.
There are lots of local cycling clubs to join and Salt Ayre Leisure Centre will be running a number of cycling skills courses alongside the exhibition.
The Museum is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm. Admission is free.
All exhibition talks start at 1pm and take place in the museum's Education Room.
