(Media-Newswire.com) - Airport West tram passengers can now enjoy safer and easier access to trams thanks to new platform stops along the entire length of Matthews Avenue.
Public Transport Minister Lynne Kosky said the $4.3 million upgrade of 13 stops provided greater convenience for passengers catching the Route 59 tram from Airport West to the City.
“The Brumby Government is taking action to improve public transport access and these platform stops will provide a safer environment for tram passengers along Matthews Avenue’s dedicated tram line,” Ms Kosky.
“Platform stops are not only wider and more accessible, but they are custom-made for the introduction of new low-floor trams to Melbourne’s tram network.
“In addition, the provision of shelters on stops in both directions means passengers will no longer need to wait on the other side of the tracks in wet weather.
“All 13 stops were built over one weekend in April, minimising any inconvenience to passengers. This is the most platform stops ever constructed in the one weekend.”
Member for Niddrie, Rob Hulls MP, said the new platform stops were welcome news for Airport West tram users.
“Route 59 is one of Melbourne’s most popular tram routes, with more than 28,000 passengers using the service on a typical weekday,” Mr Hulls said.
“These platform stop upgrades will greatly improve public transport access for Airport West commuters, who rely on trams to get to and from the city.”
Ms Kosky said the Brumby Government was committed to providing safer, more accessible public transport options for all commuters.
“In May 2006, this Government committed $250 million over 10 years to make public transport more accessible,” Ms Kosky said.
“The new platforms at tram stops 53, 54, 55, 56, 57, 58 and 59 along Matthews Avenue are fully compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act ( 1992 ) and its standards for public transport.
“The Brumby Government is committed to meeting the requirements of the Act to make tram travel more accessible for users all needs.”
