(Media-Newswire.com) - Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet will be asked to approve the long term strategic aims for the county’s transport infrastructure at cabinet next week.
If approved, the updated Local Transport Plan will be sent out for further consultation between February and April, marking the final opportunity for residents, businesses and key stakeholders to contribute to the plan.
Local Transport Plan
The plan will support the ambitions for the county up to 2031, before which an expected 100,000 new homes and 85,000 new jobs are likely to be created.
The plan includes the Oxford Transport Strategy, which sets out ambitious plans for transport in and around Oxford city, including looking at mass transit solutions like rapid bus services along strategic routes, integrating transport modes by transforming the park and ride network and making it easier to cycle by introducing cycle super routes across the city.
Also featured is our innovative ‘Science Transit’ approach to deliver a comprehensive, high quality public transport network for Oxfordshire and new, updated Bus strategies.
Consultation
Last year saw the launch of the plan, which set out an ambitious and look at the county’s transportation infrastructure and how best to manage the expected growth in population and jobs in the decades to come.
The plan’s content and direction has been informed by last summer’s ‘Connecting Oxfordshire’ public roadshows and local liaison at Member locality meetings.
Leader of the Council, Councillor Ian Hudspeth said: “This marks the next phase of Connecting Oxfordshire, a journey that started 10 months ago and will allow us to set out our ambition for Oxfordshire.
“We have listened to everyone who has responded to last year’s consultation and this latest draft has refined and improved on those original proposals. By setting out our ambitions we are putting ourselves in the best possible position to realise these goals.”
Funding
Because transport improvements are now funded via the Local Growth Fund ( LGF ) and the Local Enterprise Partnership ( LEP ), and the increasing importance of developer funding to mitigate the transport impacts of growth, we need an ambitious, up-to-date Local Transport Plan which will support us in the necessary negotiations and bidding processes.
Councillor Hudspeth added: “There is no guarantee that all of these schemes will come to fruition but we must be prepared to set out our ambitions and show that Oxfordshire want to grow and are willing to put in place the infrastructure required.”
