(Media-Newswire.com) - WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney ( NY-12 ) released the following statement in reaction to President Obama’s 2015 State of the Union Address.
“With our economy continuing to show signs of increasing strength, the challenge we now face as a country is expanding economic opportunity for all Americans. And, tonight, I believe President Obama rose to the challenge, laying out an impressive vision to ensure everyone willing to make the effort can share in the American Dream.
“2014 was a banner year for our economy. We experienced the strongest private sector job growth we’ve had in 17 years. We’ve now had 58 consecutive months of private sector job growth, the longest stretch on record. Inflation is tame, the federal budget deficit has been slashed, home values are rising, and people’s retirement accounts are growing thanks to a record breaking stock market.
“Investments in infrastructure, public education and health research, action on immigration reform, and innovative job training programs, are exactly what we need right now to unleash new opportunities for the middle class.
“It’s also an especially promising mix for New York City, where infrastructure investments like the Second Avenue Subway and East Side Access will transform how we get to and around our great city, where our world-class hospitals conduct cutting-edge research and where schools like Cornell-Technion on Roosevelt Island will revolutionize how we prepare students for a tech-centric world.
“I’m also particularly thrilled that President Obama has made paid family leave and workplace flexibility priorities and endorsed legislation similar to my Federal Employees Paid Parental Leave Act and Flexibility for Working Families Act. The U.S. is the only country in the world besides Papua New Guinea that lacks a paid family leave policy. It rings hollow to claim that you support family values, if you are not willing to show that you value families. It hurts our economy by forcing people to choose between a pay check and caring for a loved one. And it’s long past the time the U.S. to show real leadership on this important issue.”
