PHILADELPHIA - A 36-year-old Liberian national being held by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was pronounced dead Friday morning at York County Memorial Hospital in Pennsylvania after suffering an apparent heart attack.
(Media-Newswire.com) - PHILADELPHIA - A 36-year-old Liberian national being held by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement ( ICE ) was pronounced dead Friday morning at York County Memorial Hospital in Pennsylvania after suffering an apparent heart attack.
Evelyn Kama Obey was being detained by ICE at the York County Prison in Pennsylvania. Obey was found in her bed unresponsive this morning. Medical personnel provided emergency medical care to her and called for an ambulance. She was transported to York County Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Obey came into ICE custody July 15, 2009. She was under medical care and receiving daily medication for her blood pressure, diabetes and mental health. The medical department was monitoring her condition and reported it as under control.
Consistent with ICE protocol, the appropriate state health and local law enforcement agencies have also been informed. The York County Coroner's initial findings are that Obey died of natural causes. An autopsy has been scheduled. ICE notified Liberian consular officials and Obey's attorney of record. The attorney notified Obey's family of her passing.
Obey is the fourth detainee to pass away in ICE custody in fiscal year 2010.
