(Media-Newswire.com) - ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The University of Michigan Health System will offer free kidney and depression screenings during a World Kidney Day health fair 10 a.m.-2 p.m.March 11 in the hospital’s Dow Auditorium, 1515 E. Medical Center.
WKD is a joint initiative of the International Society of Nephrology and International Kidney Foundation and devoted to raising awareness about the importance of overall kidney health. Among its goal is to encourage regular screening of those with diabetes and high blood pressure, people known to be at highest risk for kidney disease.
During World Kidney Day, the U-M’s health fair will feature free health screenings, plus information on stress management, fitness and nutrition, plus hourly prize raffles. This year’s theme is based on an important question: “Amazing Kidneys: Are yours healthy?”
It’s estimated that 940,000 adults living in Michiganhave chronic kidney disease and many do not know it. That means 1 in 8 Michiganadults have the condition in which kidneys are damaged and lose function over time. The advanced stage of kidney disease, end stage renal disease, requires dialysis or a kidney transplant to live.
Health care systems worldwide are predicted to deal with high and escalating costs if no action is taken to treat the growing number of people with kidney disease. In Michigan, the rate has risen 30 percent over10 years.
The U-M’s Division of Nephrology offers a wide range of clinical services for all stages of kidney disease and its researchers are actively involved in research aimed at better treatment as well as prevention of kidney-related health issues.
