Extra $4 million to support Queensland school leavers with a disability
Queensland school leavers with a disability will benefit from increased job opportunities, care and support thanks to a $4 million funding boost from the Bligh Government.
(Media-Newswire.com) - Queensland school leavers with a disability will benefit from increased job opportunities, care and support thanks to a $4 million funding boost from the Bligh Government.
Minister for Disability Services Annastacia Palaszczuk said 290 school leavers would get access to further education and work opportunities under the $4 million Statewide support program.
“I’m pleased to announce today a new Transition from School program to help young Queenslanders access education, training and employment opportunities,” she said.
“This will mean even more young Queenslanders can access the care and support they need to build productive and rewarding lives after school.
“The program will support 290 Queensland school leavers this financial year, up from 260 last year.
“It’s great news for school leavers with a disability right across Queensland, and great news for their families.
“The new program will help young people to get a job. They’ll learn new skills in information technology, communications and business.
“As these young people enter work, vacancies will be created for other students with a disability to enter the program. In the past, people would remain in the program for many years, and this would prevent new people from entering it to get the help they need.”
Ms Palaszczuk said the Government’s existing Post School Services Program would continue to provide school leavers with important life and social skills, opening up new opportunities for social interaction.
“From Cape York to Coolangatta and inland through Central Queensland to the Darling Downs, young people and their families will benefit from our efforts to build a more inclusive Queensland,” she said.
“Our extra $4 million to support school leavers is a further sign of the Bligh Government’s commitment to building a modern Queensland – one which can be enjoyed by all Queenslanders.”
