(Media-Newswire.com) - Pedestrians and motorists can now look forward to improved travel conditions over Quart Pot Creek at Stanthorpe thanks to the installation of two new footbridges.
Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace said with the footbridges about to open to pedestrians, traffic on the Carnarvon Bridge would return to normal next week, weather permitting.
“Once the traffic management equipment is removed, all lanes on the Carnarvon Bridge will be re-opened to motorists,” Mr Wallace said.
“The existing footbridge, which is part of the Carnarvon Bridge, was closed in November last year due to safety concerns about its deteriorating condition.
“As a temporary measure, the Department of Transport and Main Roads closed one lane of the Carnarvon Bridge to motorists to allow pedestrians to cross the creek.
“The new footbridges were installed at the end of October, with the department’s construction arm RoadTek completing minor works over the next two weeks.
“These improvements will mean a safer access for mobility scooters and wheelchairs and the elderly of the community, as well as improved visibility for motorists.
“I'd like to thank the community for its continued support and patience during the planning and construction of this project.
“My department was successful in obtaining funding from the recent budget for the planning and design stage of a new road bridge which incorporates a footbridge.”
