(Media-Newswire.com) - Former University of Iowa Writers' Workshop visiting faculty member Mary Jo Bang will read from her new poetry collection, "The Bride of E," in a free event at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, in Prairie Lights Books, 15 S. Dubuque St.
Bang is the author of six books of poems, including "Louise in Love" and "The Eye Like a Strange Balloon." Her recent "Elegy" won the National Book Critics Circle Award and was a New York Times Notable Book. Her first book, "Apology for Want," won the 1996 Bakeless Prize.
Bang's work has been chosen three times for the "Best American Poetry" series, and she is the recipient of numerous awards, including a Discovery/The Nation award, a Pushcart Prize, a Guggenheim grant, a Hodder Fellowship and the Alice Fay di Castagnola Award.
She is a graduate of the Master of Fine Arts program at Columbia University and has a master's degree in sociology from Northwestern University and a bachelor's degree in photography from the Polytechnic of Central London.
