The first gift was part of a total contribution of $1,325,750 presented to Texas A&M in May by Shariq Yosufzai '74, president of Chevron Global Marketing and a graduate of Texas A&M in Petroleum Engineering. The bulk of this gift ($400,000) is earmarked for computer and server room upgrades with the remainder to be used for academic seminars and student field trips.
(Media-Newswire.com) - The Department of Geology & Geophysics in the College of Geosciences recently received two gifts from Chevron Corporation – one for $450,000 and a second for $31,500.
The first gift was part of a total contribution of $1,325,750 presented to Texas A&M in May by Shariq Yosufzai ’74, president of Chevron Global Marketing and a graduate of Texas A&M in Petroleum Engineering. The bulk of this gift ( $400,000 ) is earmarked for computer and server room upgrades with the remainder to be used for academic seminars and student field trips.
A second gift of $31,500 received in June is dedicated to student support. That gift will provide $3,500 to support the department’s student chapter of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists with the remaining $28,000 supporting student scholarships and fellowships.
“We are honored that over a third of Chevron’s total contribution to A&M this year is dedicated to supporting our geology & geophysics programs,” said College of Geosciences Interim Dean Luis Cifuentes. “A great many of our former students are now Chevron employees, and we feel quite fortunate to have such a strong relationship with one of the world’s leading energy companies.”
Geosciences Development Director Diane Barron added that “we are fortunate to have Mark Koelmel, general manager of Chevron Energy’s Earth Science Department, serving on the Advisory Council for the Department of Geology & Geophysics. His commitment and leadership continue to make a significant impact.”
There are more than 650 Texas A&M graduates currently employed by Chevron, including 160 Aggies who were recruited and hired in the past two years through a productive affiliation with A&M’s Career Center. Chevron recruits Texas A&M graduates from disciplines such as geology and geophysics, information technology, engineering, finance, process safety and supply chain for full-time employment and internships, and its employees frequently participate in career fairs and present to student organizations. In addition, six Aggies currently serve, and others have served, on Chevron’s 50-member Management Committee, and three current or former Chevron executives have been honored as Distinguished Alumni of Texas A&M.
Last year, Chevron gave more than $4 million through the Texas A&M Foundation to the Departments of Geology & Geophysics, Petroleum and Civil Engineering, and Telecommunications. In addition to a wide range of academic program support, Chevron’s gifts support scholarships, faculty chairs and professorships, and graduate fellowships.
In 2008, Chevron employees and retirees personally gave more than $107,000 to Texas A&M through the company’s matching-gift program.
“We can always count on the generosity of Chevron to bolster our engineering and science programs at Texas A&M,” said Ed Davis, Texas A&M Foundation president. “In these incredibly volatile economic times, it’s comforting to know that we have a secure relationship with a company like Chevron that understands the value of investing in higher education.”
