(Media-Newswire.com) - Five members of the University of Reading Canoe Club were involved in saving three people on a fishing trip in Teignmouth, Devon over the weekend.
Two of the kayakers got the three men, who had been in the water, back to the shore on their kayaks, while the other three pulled the fishing boat back to the beach.
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency praised the kayakers. "The five kayakers did a superb job. They were equipped and carried first aid and space blankets. They got the men ashore and used the space blankets to prevent hypothermia setting in."
Kathryn Charlesworth, President of the University Canoe Club, and one of the students involved, said: "The sea was rough when we saw the people in the water and it took us 15 minutes to get them to shore on the ends of our kayaks. We were well prepared as we drill for deep water rescues for kayaking incidents and we always carry full survival kits, which includes blankets to warm up anyone suffering from hypothermia. We are truly delighted to have been able to help these people and it shows just how important it is to carry the appropriate equipment on the sea. And I am really proud of all the students."
Rob Robson, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Teaching and Learning at the University of Reading, said:"These actions bring great credit to the students involved and the Reading University Canoe Club and is typical of the young people we have studying here at Reading. I am sure the University will want to recognise their bravery."
The group consisted of:-
Kathryn Charlesworth, 3rd year art and psychology student and President of the University Canoe Club
Iain Hissett – Masters student in meteorology
James Pardoe – Reading graduate ( 2008 )
Kieran Terry – Reading graduate
Stuart Moffatt – Undergraduate studying building surveying
The student canoe club was on its annual trip to Devon.
