UI conference examines racial disparities in justice, welfare systems Dec. 3-5

(Media-Newswire.com) - Minorities make up roughly one-third of Iowa's prison population, and minority youth are more likely to be expelled from school or involved in juvenile justice and child welfare systems. An upcoming University of Iowa conference will offer strategies for reducing these racial disparities.
The seventh annual Disproportionate Minority Contact ( DMC ) Conference will be held Dec. 3-5 at the Holiday Inn Northwest at Merle Hay Road and Interstate 80 in Des Moines. The theme is "Fair and Equal Treatment Under the Law."
The conference is geared toward a broad audience, including juvenile court officers, child welfare workers, police officers, social workers, judges, attorneys, healthcare workers, youth workers, youth, parents, mental health and substance abuse service providers, researchers, educators and students.
Nationally recognized trainers will share culturally competent strategies for reducing racial disparities. Participants will learn, exchange information, build relationships and help develop community solutions.
