With the Vancouver 2010 games just months away, the Olympic figure skating champion turned health advocate has an important message for women: Do not take your health for granted.
(Media-Newswire.com) - Washington, DC -- - In the latest issue of pause® magazine, Peggy Fleming advises women to take charge of their health: "You have an instinct when something's wrong. You need to follow those instincts and get checked out. Don't worry about it. Just do something about it." With the Vancouver 2010 games just months away, the Olympic figure skating champion turned health advocate has an important message for women: Do not take your health for granted.
"People need to take charge of their health on a daily basis, and that means watching what they eat, doing some kind of consistent exercise, and having regular check-ups," says Fleming in the new issue of pause®. She also preaches the importance of knowing your family history and being aware of your own body. Fleming credits these principles-which are part of her winning strategy for healthy living-for helping detect her early-stage breast cancer and for staving off a strong family history of heart disease. "Peggy Fleming is a true champion for women's health, and we are pleased to highlight how she makes preventive care and good health a priority," says Isaac Schiff, MD, chair of the pause® Medical Advisory Board and chief of the Vincent Obstetrics and Gynecology Service at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Joe Vincent Meigs Professor of Gynecology at Harvard Medical School in Boston. "Ms. Fleming offers women sound, practical recommendations for achieving balance in their lives, modifying their lifestyles, and making healthy choices. She reminds us of what a champion she is-not only as Olympic gold medal winner but as an advocate for empowering women to be proactive about their health," adds Dr. Schiff.
