The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, met Thursday with the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Peru, María Zavala Valladares, in his office at the OAS Headquarters in Washington, DC.
(Media-Newswire.com) - The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, met Thursday with the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Peru, María Zavala Valladares, in his office at the OAS Headquarters in Washington, DC.
Ambassador Zavala presented the Secretary General with a letter from the President of Peru, Alan García Pérez, where he informs about the Peruvian initiative at the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) “with the purpose of achieving a substantial reduction in the goal of arms purchases and reducing military spending.”
The initiative also proposes “the signing of a Peace and Non-aggression agreement” that would allow the region to “dedicate more resources to eradicating poverty and achieving better conditions of welfare and social justice.”
