Housing Minister Karen Struthers said the Bligh Government was working hard to help vulnerable Queenslanders find a place to call home.
Speaking at the Tenants’ Union of Queensland’s annual general meeting today, the Minister said new government funding and services would help put a roof over people’s heads.
“We’re working with the Rudd Government and business and community sectors to provide more than 2,000 new rental properties in the private market, and build 4,000 new social housing dwellings,” Ms Struthers said.
“We’re also expanding our RentConnect services to help people enter the private rental market.
“Community and private sector partnerships are important to our Toward Q2 goal of creating a fairer, more caring Queensland. We value the combined expertise and resources all parties can bring to the table.”
Ms Struthers said the impact of the global financial crisis had affected many people’s ability to sustain their tenancies, resulting in more people reaching out to the Tenants’ Union.
“I commend the Tenants’ Union for the work they are doing. They’re always there to lend a helping hand to tenants with information, advocacy and advice.”
“By working together, we have the opportunity to make a real difference to people’s lives.”
“This is about giving people who most need our help the best possible chance to move forward with their lives and to have a place to call home.”
