(Media-Newswire.com) - Students from Bath Spa University have teamed up with Bath Film Festival to programme a series of films about sport, to be shown on the big screen during the festival from 12 to 21 November.
Expect worldwide features: British classic The Belles of St Trinians, Australian cricket horror spoof I Know How Many Runs You Scored Last Summer, American skateboard biog Lords of Dogtown featuring the late Heath Ledger, and recently released Sugar, about a young Dominicans pursuit of the American Dream through baseball.
The project, called Celluloid Games, is supported by RELAYS, a 3.1 million pound project designed to inspire young people and their communities to participate in, create and promote cultural and sporting activities in South West England. Its aim is to create a positive and lasting legacy beyond 2012. RELAYS is funded by Legacy Trust UK, an independent charity that has been set up to help build a lasting cultural and sporting legacy from the 2012 Olympic Games and HEFCE (Higher Education Funding Council for England).
The four student programmers from Bath Spa University - Anastasia Hellewell, Elspeth Hinde, Gemma James and Jet Winyard (studying Media Communications, English Literature and Film and Screen Studies) - are all passionate about film. They volunteered to take part in the project to develop their skills, gain work experience and learn more about film exhibition. They embarked on the project in June and have been responsible for researching and selecting films, liaising with film distributors, booking venues, writing film notes and promoting the screenings.
Anastasia Hellewell said: "Together we have compiled a diverse collection of films and were proud of what weve achieved. The project has given us an insight into how a film festival is put together and weve really enjoyed the experience."
Celluloid Games kicks off with Running Shorts a free rolling programme of sporty short films presented in the Black Gazebo in Green Park Station on Sunday 15 November. The geographically diverse collection includes College, starring Buster Keaton, and Jan Svankmajer's Virile Games, alongside others featuring women's football, the Tour de France, skateboarding and freerunning.
Film festival screenings take place in a variety of venues in Bath - mainly at the Little Theatre Cinema but also at Bath Spa University's Newton Park campus and at the University of Bath.
Please see the Bath Film Festival website for full details of screenings and how to book tickets: www.bathfilmfestival.org.uk - or telephone 01225 463362/ 0871 7042061
