World renowned astronomer, Professor Michael Rowan-Robinson from Imperial College London, will give a lecture at the University of Ulster’s Belfast campus tomorrow night.
(Media-Newswire.com) - World renowned astronomer, Professor Michael Rowan-Robinson from Imperial College London, will give a lecture at the University of Ulster’s Belfast campus tomorrow night.
A former President of the Royal Astronomical Society and winner of the 2008 Hoyle Medal, Professor Rowan-Robinson will deliver a speech entitled, ‘The Cosmology of Distant and Dusty Galaxies’.
“Since the launch of the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) in 1983, extragalactic astrophysics and cosmology has seen a dramatic shift towards infrared astronomy,” he explained.
“Today the successor of the Hubble Space Telescope is being built and the latest truly giant ground-based telescopes are being planned and they are primarily infrared telescopes.”
In his lecture, Professor Michael Rowan-Robinson will describe how infrared surveys with the IRAS and with successor missions like ISO and Spitzer, have impacted on cosmology, both our understanding of the large-scale structure of the universe, and how galaxies have formed and evolved.
He will also show the latest results from the Herschel mission, launched only in May this year and suggest what may be in store from the infrared telescopes of the future.
There are still places available for the lecture which will be held in the Conor Lecture Theatre at 6pm. Admission is free but booking is essential through the Royal Irish Academy website at www.ria.ie.
