(Media-Newswire.com) - LINCOLN, Neb. — The University of Nebraska-Lincoln's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources' Alumni Association has honored a longtime cattleman and a Lexington family with alumni awards.

Paul F. Engler of Texas received the Henry Beachell Distinguished Alumni Award and the Brown family received the Legacy Award.

Engler, born in Stuart, Neb., received a bachelor's degree in animal science from the University of Nebraska in 1951, taught vocational agriculture, worked for a cattle company, became a partner in a grain elevator and cattle-feeding operation and worked for IBP.

Engler formed his own company, Cactus Feeders, in 1975; it became the largest cattle-feeding company in the world.

Max Brown was a pioneer in broadcast journalism who helped establish the Nebraska Rural Radio Association, which included KRVN Radio, founded in 1951. The association grew to six stations and 4,200 farm and ranch family owners. Max Brown served as general manager until 1979.

His son Eric began his broadcasting career in 1962 at KRVN as a rock 'n' roll disc jockey while a junior at Lexington High School. He graduated from the university's School of Journalism, then went on to receive advanced degrees at the University of Missouri and Ohio University. In addition to managing KRVN since his father's retirement, Eric Brown is heavily involved with many agriculture-related organizations, including Ag Builders of Nebraska.

The CASNR Alumni Association presented the awards Sept. 11 and 12.
