(Media-Newswire.com) - COLUMBUS, Ohio – Dr. Steven Devine, Director of Blood & Marrow Transplant Program at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute, will testify on behalf of the Umbilical Cord Blood Donations legislation at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday (6/24) in the South Hearing Room at the Ohio Statehouse.

House Bill 102, sponsored by Rep. Todd Book (D-McDermott), is pending in the Senate Health Committee after passing in the House. The bill requires the Department of Health to make available on its Web site printable publications containing standardized, objective information about umbilical-cord-blood banking. It also requires the department to encourage healthcare professionals to provide the publications to pregnant women prior to the third trimester.

Umbilical Cord Blood Donations have been increasingly utilized as a source of the cells needed for a successful transplant for both adult and pediatric patients with cancers amenable to blood and bone marrow transplantation, such as leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma.
