(Media-Newswire.com) - WASHINGTON?- The Republican and Democratic pollsters of The George Washington University Battleground 2008 Poll announce their predictions for today's presidential election.

Celinda Lake, Democratic pollster and president of Lake Research Partners, predicts the following percentages for the presidential candidates: Sen. Barack Obama 51.5%; Sen. John McCain 46.5%; Robert Barr 1%; and Ralph Nader 1%.

Ed Goeas, Republican pollster and president of The Tarrance Group, predicts the following percentages for the presidential candidates: Sen. Barack Obama 50.2%; Sen. John McCain 48.3%; Robert Barr 0.9%; and Ralph Nader 0.6%.

Christopher Arterton, dean of The George Washington University Graduate School of Political Management, said "Today's historic election may be a result of the significant increase in the number of registered voters nationwide and the prediction of a large turnout among young voters. These factors have influenced pollsters more so than in past elections and could be determinative of the outcome."

In the 2004, 1996, and 1992 presidential elections, The George Washington University Battleground Poll had the distinction of being the most accurate national poll predicting the presidential election outcome. For an overview of predictions since the 1992 presidential election, visit http://www.tarrance.com/files/Final-ballot-final-prediction.pdf

Initiated in June 1991, polls have gained widespread recognition as reliable, leading indicators of national opinions and voters' intentions. The national polling program is unique to the industry because it offers the distinct perspective of two top pollsters from different sides of the political aisle.

The George Washington University has been the sponsor of the GW-Battleground Poll since 2004. GW's role in the poll is guided by its Graduate School of Political Management. The University is recognized as having some of the most politically active students in the nation in the 2009 Princeton Review.
