Leading Islamic thinker to speak In Manchester

Tariq Ramadan will join other leading thinkers to examine the different ways Islam is represented across the world at a conference called 'Representing Islam: Comparative Perspectives'. The Swiss academic and theologian -who advises western Governments including the UK and the EU – will be speaking at a debate on multiculturalism.




(Media-Newswire.com) - Tariq Ramadan will join other leading thinkers to examine the different ways Islam is represented across the world at a conference called 'Representing Islam: Comparative Perspectives'.

The Swiss academic and theologian -who advises western Governments including the UK and the EU – will be speaking at a debate on multiculturalism.

BBC Radio Presenter Kenan Malik and Head of the Glasgow Media Group Greg Philo will also be contributing to the conference.

Organiser of the event Professor Stephen Hutchings will also announce plans to launch a new research centre which will examine a range of issues relating to modern Islam.

The Centre for the Study of Muslim Civilisation in Our World will be based in Manchester's School of Languages, Linguistics and Cultures and begin work in 2009.

Organiser of the event Professor Stephen Hutchings said: “This conference will be primarily concerned with the way Islam is portrayed in the press, television, radio, film and the internet.

“Speakers come from all five continents including the Arab world, Europe, America India and Malaysia.”

He added: “The Centre for the Study of Muslim Civilisation in Our World will be dedicated to looking at Islam in the Muslim-Arab world as well as Europe.

“It will focus on issues of inter-faith cohesion and tension, and hopes to inform social policy in the UK and elsewhere, as well as contributing to mutual understanding between Muslim and non-Muslim communities throughout Europe.”
