Smith, a Mount Vernon College Alumna, and Blossom, a Former Faculty Member at Mount Vernon College and GW, are Recognized for Contributions to Mount Vernon College and GW's Mount Vernon Campus
(Media-Newswire.com) - WASHINGTON -- The George Washington University's Mount Vernon Campus on Foxhall Road recently honored two Mount Vernon community members with Elizabeth J. Somers Leadership Awards during the recent Mount Vernon Reunion Weekend. Anne Berkeley Smith, MVC '56, received the Elizabeth J. Somers Alumnae Leadership Award, and Nancy Blossom, received the Elizabeth J. Somers Faculty Leadership Award.
Smith served as president of her class at Mount Vernon College and earned a bachelor's degree in art history. She went on to chair the Mount Vernon College Board of Trustees, serve as president of the Mount Vernon Alumnae Association, and become a founding member of the Council for Mount Vernon. A recipient of the Distinguished Alumna Award and an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Mount Vernon College, Smith recently served as president of the board of trustees for the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach, Fla., where she and her husband, GW alumnus Harold Smith, B.A. '51 and B.L. '53, are generous donors.
"I was so honored to receive the award because Mount Vernon is such an important part of my life," said Smith. "It was just a glorious day for me, which will stay with me always."
Blossom was an interior design faculty member from 1987 to 2002 at Mount Vernon College and subsequently at The George Washington University. She now is professor and chair of Washington State University's interior design program, as well as director of the WSU's Interdisciplinary Design Institute. A professional designer for 25 years, Blossom is recognized as a leader in national and international design associations.
"I grew to appreciate the special student who came to Mount Vernon to study interior design, usually leaving another profession or career behind," said Blossom. "These women were focused, intelligent, and fun, and they pushed their professors and themselves. I am honored to receive this award, and in accepting it I honor all of those who walked before me and walked with me on this beautiful campus."
The Elizabeth J. Somers Leadership Awards, awarded annually since 1997, are given to Mount Vernon College alumnae and current or former faculty members, who, in the spirit of Elizabeth J. Somers' educational philosophy, have made outstanding contributions to the Mount Vernon community.
